Not Dead Yet!

Many years ago I was in a cab on Nantucket trying to get to a house on Joy street.  The cabbie got on the radio to find out where it was and the answer came back, “Between the cemeteries, that’s Joy.”  It was a very short street!

Today marks 10 years since my last blog post. Yesterday I acquired a pair of pint sized ponies. They are at Twilight Farms in Fresno, Ohio and, if life goes as planned, I’ll meet them for the first time in March. Because, yes – I’m finally planning another adventure!

Honestly, this first blog post is just a ping into the void. Is there anybody out there? How’s everybody doing? After the Long Ride, I was so tired of living my life in public that, despite a few attempts to maintain “a following,” the pendulum swung hard into invisibility. Because what did I have to offer? What did I want to offer? Who even was I without the herd? (for those of you wondering, Jesse James and Saint Finehorn are with Gryph, living out their well deserved retirement in central Florida)

I’ve spent the past 8 1/2 years holed up on 10 acres in the middle of Lopez Island, Washington in serious hermit mode. It’s beautiful here, in a Pacific Northwest sort of way. Rural and peaceful. A much needed and deeply appreciated time of rest and reckoning. And now, like Mesannie Wilkins, I’ve been told by a doctor that I’ve probably only got a few years left here on planet Earth. Which is sobering, to say the least. It would be easy enough to curl up here and live out my remaining days quietly, and maybe I’d live a little longer. But then I ask myself, What is a life for?

So – is anybody out there? Want to follow along on another adventure? If so, I’ll be sharing more of my plans for the future and some stories from the betweens soon. As ever, I love questions and interactions and moments of Joy.

Wishing you all Blessings and Adventures – while we’re still Between the Cemeteries!

  1. I am do glad you resurfaced. I followed you on your first adventure and the photographs and stories were wonderful. I thought of you when I met a young man who was traveling through Ohio with his two Mustangs on an incredible journey from Utah, called The Year of The Mustang. I can’t wait to find out what you have planned for your next adventure.
